Parking at Georgetown Lake:
Take I-70 to Georgetown. Exit and go east on 15th st. to the roundabout. Enter the roundabout and exit out the left side and head north on Argentine St. Drive 1/2 a mile and turn right on 22nd and park in the dirt lot by the lake.
Start : Sunday, 6/30/2013, 7:00am
The official start of the ride will be at 11th and Rose St.
From the parking area head south back toward the roundabout. Enter the roundabout and exit the left side heading east on 15th. Take the next right on Rose St. and ride four blocks to the starting area.
The ride will start at 7am. To easy congestion on Guanella Pass Road, the start will be broken into groups of 50 riders each starting a few minutes apart beginning at 7am.
The Ride:
From the start, head south down Rose St. through the town of Georgetown. At the end of Rose St. turn left onto Guanella Pass Road. Climb steeply on the beautifully paved for the next 5 miles through a series of switchbacks. You will get a little break as you pass by Clear Lake. The climb continues at a relatively modest rate over the next 3 miles (pictured left) but is punctuated by several short but steep pitches. The final 3 miles of the climb once again is a series of switchbacks that brings you above treeline to the summit. Enjoy the views at the aid station in the forest service parking lot on top of the pass. For the Half of the Half, turn around here after taking in the views, fueling up at the aid station or just hanging out and watching the finishers of the Guanella Pass Hill Climb race.
From the summit continue along Guanella Pass Road and start your descent toward the town of Grant. You will descend quickly back among the lodgepoles. As you pass into Park County the paved road becomes more rough. Continue on as the road flattens out a bit. Before descending steeply once again through a couple switchbacks. The road will then turn to dirt. This will be your turn around. Original plan was to take the dirt into Grant but Park County was not able to grade the road sufficiently in time and the condition are unsafe for road bikes. Energy bars, snacks and hydration will be provided to fuel you up for the clmb back to the summit. After a nice rest, turn your wheels back uphill. The aid station at the top will still be waiting for you. A final snack and it is smooth sailing all the way back to Georgetown.
Party:
You've earned it! Enjoy yourself at Georgetown City Park, located just one block south of the starting area on Rose St. The park offers an amazing play area for the kids, so have the family come meet you after the ride. We will have live music featuring Generations of Faith with Jimmie Tisdale on sax, vendor expo for our sponsors and a beer garden from Tommyknocker. Food takeout is just a block away at the Alpine Restaurant.
Support:
The ride will be supported by our friends at Green Mountain Sports. They will have mechanical service at the starting area and will provide rolling support along the course but still bring a couple of tubes and a pump and know how to use them. Also bring suitable gear for the elements. It can be chilly on top of the pass at anytime of year. SAG will also be available but you wont need that now will you!
